Snorkeling With Whale Sharks
The giant whale shark, the world’s largest fish, likes to feed in the Sea of Cortez in an area just 15 minutes by boat from La Paz’s Malecón. Whale sharks have been spotted in the area every month of the year except June, though early winter to late spring is considered whale shark high season. The gentle fish mostly eat plankton and don’t seem to mind if small numbers of humans snorkel nearby, marveling at their bus-sized checkerboard-patterned bodies.
You might also see real whales off La Paz too; humpbacks, grey whales and even rare blue whales love feeding in the Sea of Cortez’s rich waters.

Playa Tecolote
El Tecolote is the last beach on the scenic road in La Paz and is at the tip of the bay. Because of its deeper water, those more interested in swimming might prefer the beach at El Tecolote, just a few minutes away from Playa Balandra. Snorkelers have plenty of sea life to admire. El Tecolote looks out toward Isla Espiritu Santo to the north, though the best snorkeling is around the rocks at the southern end of the beach. El Tecolote also has a few restaurants and water sports equipment rental shops, and it’s favored by local residents.
El Coromuel
This is the first beach of the tourist corridor of La Paz. Playa Coromuel is popular among locals given its proximity to the city known for hosting families who spend their weekends under the comfortable palm umbrellas. You can find palapas, bathrooms, and all the facilities to have fun. Recently it was certified with the Blue Flag badge.
La Paz’s Malecón
The waters off the Malecón in downtown La Paz are usually the first that visitors see after their arrival in this city of 250,000. It’s possible to swim from the beaches along this 2.5-mile waterfront walking promenade. A statue of Jacques Cousteau overlooks the ocean view from the Malecón. You’ll also see sculptures of whales, dolphins and other sea life that you might encounter once you hit the waves in the Sea of Cortez.
Isla Espiritu Park
On the rocky Los Islotes islets, is a sea lion colony of about 350 friendly animals. Curious females and pups sometimes swim with snorkelers, turning somersaults before your eyes. Snorkelers will also see a wide variety of colorful fish and perhaps even a large school of sardines.
Playa Balandra
About 20 minutes north of La Paz, the shallow calm waters of Balandra Beach make it ideal for families with young children. The crescent-shaped beaches of Balandra are stunning, and no development distracts from the landscape. Snorkelers appreciate the clear waters so they can admire the underwater world that thrives among the mangroves and the rocky reefs. Look for Hongo de Balandra, a mushroom-shaped rock formation that pokes out of the water.

This beach is located near the port, but still far from any noise or crowds. Pichilingue has two seafront excellent seafood restaurants where you can enjoy the typical chocolate clams.
