Puerto Peñasco is famous for being part of the “largest aquarium in the world” under the waters of the Sea of Cortez. After taking a view dives, you’ll really enjoy all the diversity of sea life in the crystal blue waters of the sea.
Sandy Beach
Walk-in entries are easy and safe. At high tide, depths in the cove range from 3 to 20 feet (1 to 6 m), perfect for skill evaluations and students’ first exposure to saltwater diving. Just outside, the sand and rock substrate slopes gradually to 40 feet (12 m). Diverse Cortez sea life, especially invertebrates such as nudibranchs, sea stars, sea cucumbers and spiny urchins, entertain students as they acclimate in non-threatening ocean conditions.
Rocky Point Bluff
For certified divers and advanced training, the boulder-strewn face offers an exciting shore entry. Typically, scuba divers ride the outgoing tide past undulating sea fans and tropical fish swimming nonchalantly against the current. Spiny lobsters, jewel morays, roughjaw frogfish and Gulf octopus peer back at curious divers from their boulder sanctuaries. Near-shore visibility commonly peaks at near 25 feet (8 m).
Bird Island (Isla San Jorge)
Underwater, the island slopes to a depth of 60 feet (18 m), its rocky shoulders covered with white, red, orange and yellow sea fans. Nudibranchs are plentiful and common fishes include sergeant majors, yellowtail snapper, Mexican barracuda, Cortez angels, chub and various species of triggerfish, wrasse and damsels. Visibility can reach 60 feet (18 m) but averages 30-40 feet (9-12 m). Near Bird Island is a sea mount that drops to 130 feet (40 m), which is diveable only on calm days.

Beach Dives
If you like dive straight from the beach, Tucson Beach, Mirador, Golden Beach and Las Conchas, are the best places to dive.
Tucson Beach
Tucson Beach is another location in which you can go snorkeling in Puerto Penasco by taking off from the beach. The beach is located near Cholla Bay and Playa Mirador (also known as Manny’s). The ocean is also clear at this location, but with a few different habitats and marine life available to view. Tucson Beach is a picturesque location for snorkeling because of its scenic views and calm waters that are generally guarded from factors that would normally disrupt snorkeling, such as strong wind and water currents.
Golden Beach
On our list that is available to snorkel at off of the beach. The ocean continues its clarity here and the beach itself is a perfect place to lay out in the sun and dry off after you’re done. When you snorkel close to this beach or any of the beaches on this list, it’s vital to bring a dive flag so that passing banana boats and other watercraft won’t injure you or disturb the fish by going near you.
Mirador Beach
Close proximity to town. It is nearby most of the famous attractions and destinations of downtown Puerto Peñasco. The Old Port’s Malecon is a must-see for those looking to enjoy local entertainment, shopping, and dining. At the Malecon in Puerto Peñasco, you can listen to a concert of local musicians, shop for souvenirs, or sit on the patio of a restaurant and enjoy the gorgeous Mexican sunset. Mirador Beach is also the place to be for those looking to enjoy the nightlife of Rocky Point. It is no secret that the town is popular spring break destination. Mirador Beach boasts some of the town’s favorite bars such as Pink Cadillac and the Baja Cantina. Soak up the sun on the shore during the day, and party the night away once the sun goes down at Mirador Beach!
Puerto Lobos
Located just two hours south of Puerto Penasco is the quiet little village of Puerto Lobos. This small fishing village has lots to offer in the way of diving and snorkeling. There is also a small wreck dive just off shore and an occasional surprise visit from a whale shark.
