Discover the
Undersea World
Isla Mujeres has some of the best scuba diving in the Caribbean. Here you can enjoy some incredible caves, and an abundance of sealife – eels, groupers, snappers, turtles, parrotfish and numerous corals.
Diving in Isla Mujeres is suitable to all levels. Many of the sites are shallow reefs with little to no current. For those with an advanced certification, a few deep wrecks await. There are arches, ledges and even a few caves ripe for exploration. If you’re staying in Isla Mujeres for a good length of time, most dive operators are able to arrange trips to the mainland for diving in Cenotes or near Cancun.
A unique experience is diving at the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks where on the bottom of the ocean a large group of reef, bull, and nurse sharks can be seen sleeping. At a depth of 20-30 meters, this dive site is recommended for advanced divers.

Machones Reef

One of the most popular activities in Isla Mujeres is to visit MUSA, (Museo Subacuático de Arte). You can tour the underwater museum by glass bottom boat to enjoy over 500 sculptures by the creator Jason deCaires Taylor. For a better experience, and to get closer to the sculptures, head on a snorkelling tour or go scuba diving. MUSA was created to encourage visitors to visit an alternative area around Isla Mujeres taking the pressure off the nearby reef.
Underwater sculpture parks are created as tourist attractions, but they are also used as artificial reefs to help promote the growth of coral and the return of more marine life.
The site in Isla Mujeres is divided into two galleries with 3 salons:
Salon Nizuc – at a depth of 4 metres and suitable for snorkeling.
Salon Punta Sam – suitable for snorkelling
Salone Machones – at a depth of 8 metres and suitable for both snorkelers and scuba divers

Pailas Reef System
Pailas is a ledge/wall that runs to the north, all the way to Isla Contoy. Lots of life with turtles, rays, reef fish, moray and nurse shark. Dive Pailas reef to experience the many swim throughs and view the varied fish and sponge life.
Punta Negra
Great opportunity to see lots of fish shoaling around the reef. Beautiful fish everywhere at some parts of the reef. The reef was flat, a sandy area with ledges and some big rocks – perfect for critters to hide. Again there was not a lot of current, easy diving and time to look around slowly for special creatures – perfect!
Many different species of moray eels, cleaner shrimps, even some lobsters, and huge crabs. Grunts can be the main attraction here, swimming and shoaling over the shallow reef in large numbers. Definitely a dive spot to visit when you are staying on Isla Mujeres!
