Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is a land of ancient ruins, beautiful beaches, and warm waters full of huge fish. A true heaven anglers of all stripes.
Being surrounded by mile after mile of luscious natural reef, makes this a bucket-list destination.
If it’s big food fish you’re after, you don’t have to look far.
Isla Mujeres is a paradise for water-lovers. Known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant reefs, it’s the perfect destination for divers, snorkelers, and of course, anglers.
Fishing is so good that it’s easy to forget everything else that Isla Mujeres has to offer. Stunning coastlines, white sandy beaches, amazing food and great culture.

Deep Sea Fishing
Going to the deep blue waters and beyond is one of the prime reasons why anglers from all corners of the planet come here to the Yucatan Channel.
If it’s serious sportfishing you’re after, you can’t get much better than Isla Mujeres deep sea fishing. Head out 20-30 miles, and you hit the Caribbean Current, full of Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Blackfin Tuna. Drop your lines in these waters, and you could be on for a Billfish Grand Slam, with most of the Billfish around for a solid six months. This is the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico, and all its major pelagic fish pass through at some point.
Bottom Fish
Mesoamerican Reef
Isla Mujeres sits on the world’s second-largest natural reef. Head out in any direction and you’ll find Grouper, Snapper, Hogfish, Triggerfish, Amberjack, and Barracuda.
Bottom Fishing
Catch the fish that lurk on the bottom of the sea such as grouper, snapper, blue jack, trigger fish, mutton snapper, and crevalle jack.
Flats Fishing
Isla Mujeres has incredible flats fishing. You can wander out from your hotel and be battling Bonefish within minutes
Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, and Snook, otherwise known as an Inshore Super Grand Slam. There are also Jacks, Barracuda, and several other top game species.
Flats fishing, a whole different world to the reefs and pelagic waters.
Roosterfish, Jacks, Snook, and Sierra Mackerel can all be caught along the local beaches. The calm, pristine waters of the area have made it possible for gigantic Roosterfish to thrive here, and they will be your prized catch on inshore excursions. Jacks are another local favorite, so you can look forward to reeling in beauties like Bigeye Trevally, Jack Crevalle, Green Jack, and Yellowtail. Mackerel of all shapes and sizes are a common catch too, as well as Snappers, Groupers, and peculiar Needlefish.
The local flats are a fly angler’s dream, with Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, and Snook, all just waiting for that perfectly-placed fly. A sturdy 9-weight is your best all-rounder for the area’s gamefish. Conventional anglers can also have great fun throwing lures with light spinning gear.
Isla Blanca Flats
Now don’t get us wrong, Isla Mujeres has incredible flats fishing. You can wander out from your hotel and be battling Bonefish within minutes. Ask any Isla Mujeres fly fishing guide, though, and they’ll recommend Isla Blanca. Why? Fewer people and mile after mile of mud, sand, and grass flats. The area’s home to Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, and Snook, otherwise known as an Inshore Super Grand Slam. There are also Jacks, Barracuda, and several other top game species, in case you still needed more.
Spearfishing
Join in this amazing experience where you hunt under the water. A guide will lead you through the most beautiful, shallow reefs while spearing some Grouper, Snapper, Lobster or even some Octopus.
Spearfishing in Isla Mujeres is similar to that of Cancun. Overall good visibility, some great spots to go spearfishing, and the nice, warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Most spots we spearfish in Isla Mujeres are only a short boat ride from shore. There are some nice areas of reef around the island, shipwrecks that attract many fish, and even a stunning sleeping shark cave which is also accessible to freedivers.

Fishing Season
Isla Mujeres fishing seasons depend on what you’re after. Billfish and inshore species are best in spring and summer, while the reefs are most active over winter. Isla Mujeres fishing is amazing all year round, though. You can catch great gamefish on the flats and food fish on the reefs every month of the year. Marlin and Sailfish may tail off in the cooler months, but Wahoo and Tuna are always around and King Mackerel are at their peak.
You’ll find barracuda, grouper, red snapper and others year round and from April to August you have mahi-mahi, wahoo and tuna and of course countless Sailfish in the winter months.
