Playa del Carmen
Playa Del Carmen is heaven for deep sea anglers. It has Marlin-deep waters less than two miles from shore. Ocean trenches score the seafloor off Playa Del Carmen, channeling monster pelagics well within sight of land. If you’re set on shallow water, you can head over to Cozumel’s flats.
The world’s second largest reef and some of the country’s best billfishing right on your doorstep,
Playa del Carmen is a paradise for water-lovers. Known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant reefs, it’s the perfect destination for divers, snorkelers, and of course, anglers.
Fishing is so good that it’s easy to forget everything else the Playa del Carmen has to offer. Stunning coastlines, white sandy beaches, amazing food and great culture. .

If you want to catch a Marlin but don’t want to spend more than four hours doing it, then you’re pretty difficult to please. Luckily, Playa Del Carmen can offer you just what you’re after – serious big game hookups without the long trip times. Dare to stay out all day, and you could be in with a serious chance of landing a Billfish Grand Slam, with Blue and White Marlin and Sailfish around for much of the year.
Seasonal offshore charter fishing at Cancun can be excellent for Atlantic sailfish during the spring-summer months of April through about late July when fly tackle enthusiasts may get a dozen shots a day on this species. The same spring-summer Cancun fishing season also offers peak opportunities for dorado, and white and blue marlin. April-May is considered Cancun’s peak fishing season for sailfish and white marlin, and at this time broadbill swordfish and shortbilled spearfish may also be sometimes encountered.
Going to the deep blue waters and beyond is one of the prime reasons why anglers from all corners of the planet come here.
Bottom Fish
The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef stretches for 600 miles along Central America’s coastline, so it’s hardly unique to Playa Del Carmen. The great thing about fishing here is that it’s all so close. Spend a few hours bottom fishing for Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, and Hogfish. As soon as you get bored, you can switch to bluewater fishing while barely moving the boat.
Playa del Carmen sits on the world’s second-largest natural reef. Head out in any direction and you’ll find Grouper, Snapper, Hogfish, Triggerfish, Amberjack, and Barracuda.
Fish the reefs, with monster Grouper and Snapper catch the fish that lurk on the bottom of the sea.

Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, and Snook, otherwise known as an Inshore Super Grand Slam. There are also Jacks, Barracuda, and several other top game species.
Roosterfish, Jacks, Snook, and Sierra Mackerel can all be caught along the local beaches. The calm, pristine waters of the area have made it possible for gigantic Roosterfish to thrive here, and they will be your prized catch on inshore excursions. Jacks are another local favorite, so you can look forward to reeling in beauties like Bigeye Trevally, Jack Crevalle, Green Jack, and Yellowtail. Mackerel of all shapes and sizes are a common catch too, as well as Snappers, Groupers, and peculiar Needlefish.
The local flats are a fly angler’s dream, with Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, and Snook, all just waiting for that perfectly-placed fly.

Fishing Season
Playa del Carmen fishing seasons depend on what you’re after. Billfish and inshore species are best in spring and summer, while the reefs are most active over winter. Playa del Carmen fishing is amazing all year round, though. You can catch great gamefish on the flats and food fish on the reefs every month of the year. Marlin and Sailfish may tail off in the cooler months, but Wahoo and Tuna are always around and King Mackerel are at their peak. You’ll find barracuda, grouper, red snapper and others year round and from April to August you have mahi-mahi, wahoo and tuna and of course countless Sailfish in the winter months.
