Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta fishing is top-notch all year round. With trophy-size Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna, among many other Sportfish, a Vallarta fisherman seldom goes home empty-handed.
Puerto Vallarta offers excellent fishing much of the year–especially for really huge tuna and marlin–and the city is one of the world’s most famous and important vacation destinations, the Puerto Vallarta area’s sportfishing opportunities are even today still in the process of being “discovered” by the outside world.
Puerto Vallarta fishing is the strongest contender for the best in the whole of Mexico’s Pacific. With its 3 legendary hotspots (El Moro, Corbetena and El Banco) and its prolific end-of-the-year Marlin seasons.

Experience
Puerto Vallarta
The two bread-and-butter offshore fishing spots for Puerto Vallarta boats are around the protruding rocks of Roca Corbetena, about 38 miles out, and around the submerged high spot known as El Banco, about 48 miles out. Both areas offer shallow reefs surrounded by drop-offs that produce not only large resident species, but also attract migrating glamour fish such as yellowfin tuna, and blue and black marlin. Fishing these relatively remote offshore spots when they are “on” is as good as it gets.
Puerto Vallarta is a paradise for water-lovers. Known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant reefs, it’s the perfect destination for divers, snorkelers, and of course, anglers.
Fishing is so good that it’s easy to forget everything else Puerto Vallarta has to offer. Stunning coastlines, beautiful sandy beaches, amazing food and great culture.
Deep Sea Fishing
Fishing in Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta fishing is the strongest contender for the best in the whole of Mexico’s Pacific. With its 3 legendary hotspots (El Moro, Corbetena and El Banco) and its prolific end-of-the-year Marlin season These are home to a great variety of pelagic fish, including Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Wahoo, and much more.
Marietas Islands (Punta Mita) – Recommended for those who want the best deep sea fishing possible in 8 hours in Puerto Vallarta (run as a combo trip with El Morro), the best chance to see whales and dolphins from the boat, those who want a chance at a trophy fish but are on a budget. Approx. 1 Hour each way.
El Morro – Recommended for those who want the best deep sea fishing possible in 8 hours in Puerto Vallarta, run as a combo trip with the Marietas Islands. All fishermen, those who want an excellent chance at a trophy fish, but don’t want the travel time of Corbetena or the Banks. Approx. 1.25 hours each way.
El Faro – Serious fishermen, trophy fishing, Marlin and Sailfish, Wahoo and Tuna. Used as an alternate to Corbetena at certain times of the year when the fish tend to cluster here. Approx. 1.25 hours each way.
Corbetena – Serious fishermen, trophy fishing, Marlin and Sailfish, Wahoo and Tuna. Our recommendation for the best overall fishing site in Puerto Vallarta. Approx 1.5 hrs each way.
The Banks – Recommended for only the most hardcore fishermen or overnighters. Popular for huge cow tuna, but at over 50 miles, it’s a long haul. Approx. 2 hours each way.But that’s not all. Puerto Vallarta is one of the best places in the world to catch huge Yellowfin Tuna, as well as Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin (not to mention the Sailfish).
Puerto Vallarta fly fishing is exciting and fun all in the same day. Sailfish and Dorados to catch on the fly fishing rod here in Puerto Vallarta.
Bottom Fishing
Inshore fishing for jacks, snappers, and other species is always available, with a good midsummer roosterfish run during July-August, jack crevalle peaking during February-March, and the various pargo or snapper species, featuring some really nice dog snappers, peaking in May-June. Cool water-loving sierra are most abundant during March-April, and there are almost always at least some dorado around offshore and inshore.
Skipack, Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, Snapper, and – of course – the iconic Roosterfish.
Banderas Bay – Recommended for trolling, bottom fishing, larger groups, wives and girlfriends, cruise passengers, those on a tight budget or short on time, those who get seasick. Less than 1 hour of travel time.
Puerto Vallarta fly fishing has been
growing in popularity here in the
Banderas bay in Puerto Vallarta. You
can target Jack Crevalle, Dorado,
Roosterfish, Bonitas and even Wahoo
depending on Angler experience
Inside Banderas Bay, you’ll find a huge variety of fish. Bonita, Skipjack, Jack Crevalle, Sierra Mackerel, Pargo, Red Snapper, Grouper, Mahi Mahi and dozens of other varieties await you. While the huge trophy fish generally prefer the cooler waters of the Pacific, they do occasionally venture into the bay. If you’re bottom fishing, trolling, or are a recreational fisherman who just wants to be on the water, this is a great destination.
Inshore boat fishing is fishing from a boat in easy sight of land. In Bahía de Banderas, the main difference with other inshore fishing, is the depth of the water, that can be in some places more than 3,000 feet, fact that brings in some pelagics like the yellow fin tuna and the sailfish inside the bay from time to time.
Puerto Vallarta fly fishing. We catch bonitas, torros, tunas, roosterfish, Spanish mackerel as well here in the Bay of Puerto Vallarta.
Lake Fishing
For those who prefer the serenity of freshwater fishing, the area around Puerto Vallarta does not disappoint. Whether you are fishing the local rivers for Snook, fighting endless Largemouth Bass in Lake Agua Milpa, or exploring Lake Cajon de Pena in the middle of the Sierra Madre mountains.

Pena is one of Puerto Vallarta’s best kept secrets.
Lake fishing
Fishing in Puerto Vallarta is incredible. Lake Cajon De Pena is stocked with Large
Mouth Florida Bass. This quiet getaway should be on every anglers list hot spots.
Take a journey about 100 km south of Puerto Vallarta to the scenic wonderland of the Costalegre, where you’ll discover the hidden paradise of Presa Cajon de Pena, perhaps the most pristine and beautiful lake in all of Mexico. You’ll spend the day surrounded by the towering peaks of the Sierra Madre mountain range, nestled snugly inside of the lush tropical jungle – a true paradise.
Bass Fishing in Puerto Vallarta can’t be beaten. The trip to the lake takes you through some incredibly scenic sights around Vallarta and the mountains.
There are two lakes to fish here close by Puerto Vallarta bass fishing. One is Agua Milpa which is about 3 hrs. away and holds some big bass. At Agua Milpa it’s not uncommon to catch over a 100 bass in one day. The other lake Cajon de Pena is only 2 hrs. away and holds really big bass. Lot of 10 lbs. on this lake.
