Discover The
Undersea World
The islands of the Sea of Cortez contain striking natural beauty in a dramatic setting formed by rugged islands with high cliffs and sandy beaches, which contrast with the brilliant reflection from the desert and the surrounding turquoise waters. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers the perfect blend of Baja kayaking, hiking and snorkeling. Abundant wildlife, massive whales, sunny weather and warm, crystalline waters make the Sea of Cortez in Loreto Bay National Marine Park one of the best winter sea kayaking and whale watching destinations in North America.
Exploring Beneath the Surface
Those who come to snorkel are in for an eye-popping treat. Colorful parrot fish, angel fish, rainbow wrasses and puffer fish call the marine park home. Grey whales come to the Sea of Cortez every year between January and March to mate and bear their young. Blue whales, humpbacks, sperm whales, orcas, fin whales and dolphins are also frequent visitors.

Main Beach
In the center of town, a long walking esplanade runs across the waterfront, with a frequented beach in front and on either side. This “malecon” is known as Calle de la Playa and is popular with locals, who frequent nearby coffee shops, cafes and bars, or gather to watch fishermen bringing in their daily catch. Families hit the sand with beach toys and games, volleyballs fly and sand castles emerge like tiny fortresses guarding a well-loved lifestyle in this small community. Swimming, snorkeling, beachcombing, kayaking and sailing are all popular activities in this area.
Ensenada Blanca
This beach, where Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto is, is just a 30-minute drive south of Loreto. This stunning beach is loved by travelers for its soft sands, romantic ambiance, and picturesque views of Danzante Island.
Coronado Beach
This brilliant white sand beach on Coronado Island in Loreto is ideal for those seeking seclusion and breathtaking vistas. It is also a great place to take a swim. Coronado Island is known for its startlingly white beaches and marine-rich coral reefs. Coronado island is home to great snorkel spots, white sand beaches, and a sea lion colony.
A paradise for snorkelers, the turquoise waters around the island offer outstanding visibility, especially for those wishing to explore the sea bottom. The island itself is covered with rocky crags, except for the southeast corner, and becomes a marine turtle sanctuary at certain times of the year.
Honey Moon Beach
A small strip of extremly private beach located on Danzante Island.
Bay of Loreto National Park Reserve
This ecologically guarded reserve includes the five islands of Coronado, Carmen, Danzante, Monserrate and Catalan Not only does it boast 3 incredible scenic islands but a surprisingly rich population of fish, marine mammals and corals. Snorkeling is the perfect activity for families, youngsters and elders, and its incredibly rewarding.
It’s easy to see great numbers of colorful marine species like angel fish, surgeon fish, butterfly fish, parrot fish, pompanos, snappers and jacks. On the way, there is also a great chance that we encounter bottlenose and common dolphins!
Carmen
Isla del Carmen, home to the most beaches, is a favored resting site for sea lions and sea birds. The underwater reef system is also more extensive, which means more colorful fish ready to be discovered
Danzante
Danzante is the smallest, yet one of the most intrincate islands within the Loreto Bay National Park. Its steep, rugged profile, and the complexity of its coastline has created dozens of inlets, coves, rock formations and secluded beaches.
Monserrate
Montserrat is seldom visited due its more remote location, rendering its landscapes and wildlife in the most pristine conditions. The trip there is often equally amazing, with great chances of encountering pods of dolphins, schools of mobula rays or even whales. Visit Las Galeras, a set of small islets surrounded by shallow, turquoise water ideal for snorkeling.
Islet of La Choya
This solitary island is actually just the visible side of a huge reef that starts from Carmen island and stretches several hundred yards into the open sea, forming a series of shallow reefs. Well known by fishermen due the amount of fish, this area offers excellent snorkeling opportunities.
Los Metates
The gorgeous sandy beaches (Los Metates and Ensenada Blanca) where the turquoise, calm waters will make you want to stay forever! Dozens of rays and turtles live on the sand, providing yet another excellent snorkel opportunity.
